Vanpool options

Vanpools, Carpools, and more!

In addition to riding a transit bus, there is the option of sharing a car, riding together in a personal vehicle or a rented van. These options not only lower transportation costs, they also can qualify a rider for rewards during the annual Get There Challenge.

For those not familiar with vanpool, Vanpool is very similar to carpooling – the only difference is the vehicle is provided! It’s a prearranged group of 4–13 people sharing a ride to and from work on a regular schedule. The vehicle, insurance, roadside assistance, and carpool matching is provided to the vanpool group and is covered in the monthly lease fee.

What is a Vanpool?

A vanpool is a prearranged group of 4 – 13 people sharing a ride to and from work on a regular schedule and is similar to a carpool except Commute with Enterprise provides the vehicle.  The great thing about forming a vanpool is each vanpool group controls its route and schedule, and can alter either at any time. If you have at least four fare-paying passengers and can provide a lead and backup driver, you can lease a vehicle from Commute with Enterprise and start a vanpool. Concerned of the commitment? You and your vanpool mates can try it for a month see if you like it, if it is not for you - disband and go back to your regular commute.

What is a subsidy?

Thanks to the Oregon Department of Transportation, SMART is offering a $500 per van/per month subsidy to help start more vanpools coming into and out of Wilsonville.

How Does it Work?

Vanpool passengers pay a low monthly fare based on the number of passengers in the van. This covers the van lease, fuel, maintenance, and insurance.  There’s also an Emergency Ride Home program included, so you never have to worry about getting stuck at work in case of an emergency. Vans are typically no more than two years old.

How do I start?

1   Talk to co-workers. Find at least three additional people who have a similar commute and want to save money by sharing the ride with you. You can also use the ride matching service Get There Oregon which matches you electronically with other commuters. SMART will also come to your worksite to answer questions, and provide a brief presentation to HR and other staff.

2   Find drivers. From your group of commuters, find two or more volunteers with good driving records. One driver is “primary” and the other is “backup.”  All drivers must complete a free Van Driver Orientation provided through Commute with Enterprise.  Drivers must be 25 years of age.

3   Contact SMART. Once you have enough commuters, let us know and we will get you started.

4   Relax! That’s all there is to forming a vanpool! Other than some paper work to complete, you’re ready to start saving. Let SMART help you get started.
